Al’s artistic flair is apparent from walls, many which have his original faux finishes, to ceiling fixtures, collected from afar and brought here to glow in this salon. Most of the furniture pieces were gathered in area antique shops and given new lives here. Alvin thanks his friend Joy Lamen for helping him find so many of his priceless finds.
And the art? Alvin is a genius at creating a mix ranging from palm trees to framed album covers from his past. Ageless. Groovy. I love all of it — and so do his faithful customers who fill his appointment book from early to late — and even chose his as Best Salon in The Paducah Sun’s recent contest.
When asked about the color of his building, Alvin said, “It is vermillion — and orange IS this year’s hot color, thank you very much.” (Actually, I love the color of Alvin’s building, and have loved it since he turned his business into a landmark for midtown several years ago.)
Alvin told me that the bottom line is he just loves to do hair and has done it for 26 years. He loved it since the very first day he went to work. He loves being in his current location and finding ways to help the community.
He loves his employees and customers like family.
Tips from Alvin
It is almost summer, enjoy what you have, use your natural gifts. If you have natural curl, use it. If you have straight hair, use that.
i There are many new anti-frizz products. Try some. Or, just let the curls go free.
i Go soft on highlights. Do not put in big chunks of extreme color.
i Seek glamour. Actually look for glamour in everything.
i Flatirons are out. They can even be harmful if used improperly, especially if protective sprays are not used. Also, do not over-do straightening, which also is bad for the hair.
i Straight hair is no longer the “it” look. Try a softer, care-free look.
i I don’t agree there is a “magic” age that one can no longer have long hair. Men or women of any age can choose a natural, well-kept look.
i Professional guidance is important. Beware of knock-off products and kits. You get what you pay for.
i “Wear clean, styled hair that looks appropriate.”
